Eleanor M. Vinson, 99, of York, passed away Monday, December 2, 2024. Eleanor was the oldest daughter of Paul and Grace Thomas. Her younger sister, Madge, passed away earlier this year. Eleanor was the wife of Curtis Vinson who died in 2006. They celebrated 58 years of marriage. Eleanor’s legacy includes her four living children and their spouses: Cecelia Weinheimer (Mark), Michael Vinson (Karla), David Vinson (Judy), and Elizabeth Gunnet (Joe). Her youngest child, Stephen, died in 1967. Eleanor had 10 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Juanita Thomas who is married to her cousin, Bill Thomas.
Eleanor graduated from the York Hospital School of Nursing as an RN during World War II. She was proud of being a Nurse Cadet. Eleanor took time away from the hospital when her children were babies. She returned to York hospital, where she worked for many years. After retirement, she was a long-time volunteer at Apple Hill.
Eleanor’s faith kept her strong. She was a lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist church, which merged with 4 th United Methodist. Music was important. She played the violin and sang in the church choir. She loved opera. Many Saturday afternoons she would listen to the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts, and it was understood that she was to be left alone to enjoy her music. Eleanor loved nature. She was a star gazer, bird watcher, and outdoor camper. She was crafty. Many family members have been the recipient of one of her hand -made quilts, sweaters, or mittens. After retirement, she and Curtis enjoyed travelling, both in
the US by car, and to Hawaii, Israel, and Europe. Eleanor loved ice cream and crossword puzzles.
Services will be held on Friday December 13, 2024, at the Gladfelter Funeral Home Inc. 822 East Market Street, York, PA 17403 with visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. A celebration of her life will follow at 11:00 a.m. and burial will be held immediately after the service at Prospect Hill Cemetery.
